Online Grant Application Process

Cal Wellness accepts the online submission of letters of interest (LOIs) through the Cal Wellness Grants Portal. An LOI is the initial step in requesting a grant from The California Wellness Foundation.

If you are new to the Cal Wellness Grants Portal, you must create a password-protected account before you can enter the portal. (See the Create a New Account section below.) If you have an existing account, log in using the same email address and password used when you created the account.

There are two different links to access the Cal Wellness Grants Portal:

  • Click “Start A New LOI” for each new submission.
  • Click “Return to Your Account” to access in-progress or submitted LOIs, proposals and reports. You may not start a new LOI from this link.

Please note that the sign-in pages for each of these links look identical, but they are not. Once you sign-in, you will be directed to the appropriate site based on which link you followed.

Before You Apply

Before you begin a new LOI, please review the Advancing Wellness Grants Program on our website and review the Funding Eligibility Criteria below.

Funding Eligibility Criteria

Once you start a new LOI, you will be asked if your organization meets the funding eligibility criteria described below.

To further the goal of advancing the wellness of all Californians, Cal Wellness makes grants to nonprofit organizations, public agencies, religious organizations and tribal governments. To apply for funding, applicant organizations must generally have a valid tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and be classified as a public charity, not as a “private foundation” under section 509(a). In addition, the Foundation does not fund Section 509(a)(3) Type III non-functionally integrated supporting organizations.

Cal Wellness will not consider organizations that discriminate by race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation or national origin, nor consider activities that exclusively benefit the members of sectarian or religious organizations. Grants are not generally awarded for annual fund drives, building campaigns, major equipment or biomedical research. Cal Wellness does not provide international funding or fund organizations located outside the United States.

Create a New Account

If this is the first time you are using the Cal Wellness Grants Portal, you will need to create an account following the steps below. For detailed instructions, including best practices for account set up, refer to the LOI Application Guide.

  1. Click Start a New LOI, and you will be taken to the sign-in page.
  2. Once the account sign-in page appears, click the “Create a New Account” link (located below the email address box).
  3. Enter an email address and password and click the “Continue” button to create your new account. Only one email address can be associated with your organization’s account, so we recommend using the organization’s general email address.
  4. You now have an account and will be directed to the first stage of the LOI application, which is a question about funding eligibility.
  5. Please save your sign-in information for future reference.

Completing and Submitting the Online LOI

Complete the online LOI by following the directions in the application. For additional information, download the LOI Application Guide with step-by-step instructions. You are required to upload a Request Narrative prior to submitting the LOI. The Request Narrative should describe the issue(s) the organization or project will address, the geographic area(s) and population(s) of focus, how Cal Wellness funds will be utilized, how the proposed work aligns with Advancing Wellness, and two key accomplishments of the organization. (See page 12 of the LOI Application Guide for more detailed instructions.)

Once the LOI is successfully completed and submitted, a message will appear that reads: “Thank you! Your application has been successfully submitted. You will receive an email notification shortly.”

Important Note: If you need to save and exit the LOI before submission, you must click the “Save & Finish Later” button (found at the bottom of each page of the online application) to ensure your information will be saved. Failure to do so may result in the loss of the contents of your application. You will be able to access your saved LOI from your Grants Portal account by clicking on the Return to Your Account link.

Please refer to the LOI Application Guide to answer most of your questions. You may also review the Using the Grants Portal section of Cal Wellness’ Q&A page. If you have remaining questions or have difficulties signing in to your Cal Wellness Grants Portal account, please contact the Foundation by phone at (818) 702-1900 and ask for Grants Management or by email at This email is checked several times a day.

What Happens Next?

After you have successfully submitted your LOI, you will receive a confirmation email that summarizes the contents of your application.

Within a few days of your online submission, you will receive an email from Cal Wellness letting you know that your LOI is under review and that you will receive notification of the status of your LOI approximately three months from the date of that email. The flowchart below details this process.

Returning to Your Grants Portal Account

You must use the Return to Your Account link to access an in-progress or previously submitted application in your Grants Portal account. You may transfer the ownership of an application to someone else or email a copy of the application. You may also give “view-only” permission to colleagues for each application, which may be helpful when seeking input. See the Using the Grants Portal section of Cal Wellness’ Q&A page for more information.

Should you be invited to submit a proposal, you will be directed to return to your account to access the proposal application. For those who receive a grant from Cal Wellness, grant reports will also be submitted online.
