We All Have #ReasonsForHope

Cal Wellness and philanthropies across the U.S. are fortunate to be inspired by the mission-focused efforts of the nonprofit organizations we fund. As America struggles with discord and despair brought by recent violence, we realize how important it is to share successes — so we can all be inspired. The #ReasonsForHope campaign launched with newspaper ads and video in early August, and continues with the social media hashtag#ReasonsForHope to encourage us all to share stories of hope and take action by engaging with organizations that work for positive change.

At Cal Wellness, we draw hope from efforts to improve the health of all Californians by leveling the playing field so that everyone has access to safe neighborhoods, good-paying jobs, and quality health care services.

Here is the latest installment of Cal Wellness’ #ReasonsForHope:

Fostering wellness and prosperity among boys and men of color Research indicates that improving economic, social, and physical well-being among boys and men of color offers tremendous return on investment – not only for the individuals, but also society at large. Cal Wellness is proud to be part of the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color, a cross-sector coalition of change agents committed to improving the life chances of California’s boys and young men of color.

Covering more California young people with health insurance than ever before — The Health4AllKids law, which expanded health coverage to all income-eligible children in California, regardless of their immigration status, took effect in May 2016. Since then, over 133,000 undocumented children have newly enrolled in comprehensive Medi-Cal (California’s Medicaid program) health coverage. Cal Wellness’ community partner Children Now has curated excellent resources, including a new infographic, on this topic.

Raising voices in underrepresented California communities — Organizations throughout California create tremendous value by mobilizing communities to be civically engaged, promoting voter registration and other activities that bring the perspectives and needs of underserved communities to policymakers. To find out more about these efforts, check out the “Bolder Together 2: Building Grassroots Movement for Change” report.

Our Guiding Principles

Guided by our mission, we pursue the following goals through our grantmaking:

  • To address the particular health needs of traditionally underserved populations, including low-income individuals, people of color, youth and residents of rural areas.
  • To support and strengthen nonprofit organizations that seek to improve the health of underserved populations.
  • To recognize and encourage leaders who are working to increase health and wellness within their communities.
  • To inform policymakers and opinion leaders about important wellness and health care issues.

Mission

The mission of The California Wellness Foundation is to improve the health of the people of California by making grants for health promotion, wellness education and disease prevention.
